What You Will Need

• Focus Fabric that’s 12″ x 44″. Focus cloth is the star of all your runner.

• Thread that matches the backing fabric.
• A iron.
• Dressmaker pins.
• A ruler or tape measure.
• A rotary cutter (optional).
• A cutting board (optional).

Choosing the Fabric

The initial step in any sewing project is selecting the cloths.

• The focus fabric, the “main attraction” of your runner, must really be 12 inches wide and about 44 inches long. (a inch or so of extra span will not hurt.) A fabric with a pattern will work best.
• Choose a backing fabric that will compliment the focus material. Simply choose one of these colors from the pattern of their focus cloth, and use that as the backing colour.

Making the Runner

• Spread the backing fabric out on a level surface. Its best side (the side you will want people to see) must be facing upwards.

• Pin the two pieces of fabric together on their right and left sides, making sure the bottom and top edges will also be lined up. Do not get worried about the backing fabric being bigger than the focus material. It will all make sense in only a little bit.
• Sew the fabric on both trapped sides. Use a seam allowance of involving 1/4 and 1/2 of the inch, whichever one you’re comfortable with. After sewing, you’ll have a fabric tubing.
• Switch the cloth tubing inside out, so that the “right sides” of both cloths are facing out.
• Lay the tubing on a level surface, so that the backing fabric is on the bottom, and also the focus cloth is on the surface. When you smooth down the cloth, a number of the edge cloth will be observable over the sides. These are your own boundaries.
• Arrange the cloths so that the same amount of edge is showing on both sides. You may use a ruler or tape measure for this particular step should youn’t believe you’re able to do it by eye.
• Use a iron set on to steam to press the unfinished runner, then concentrating on the seams (the folds) on each side.
• This step isn’t necessary, but it will assist the runner maintain its shape during washingmachine Sew a stitch down the length of each edge. Try to get the stitch as close to your focus material as possible.

Completing the Ends

Now it’s time to finish the two ends (the top and the bottom) of your table runner. There are essentially two methods to do this, based on which you like best… and which you find easiest.

• Option 1. Fold the border to the backing, about 1/4 of the inch. Give the flux a good pressing, then sew the hem. This is the easiest way to finish off your table speaker. But, if you would like to do something a little fancier, there is another option.

• Option 2. When the edges are ragged or uneven, you may use a rotary cutter to cut on them. This way, your table runner will probably be less or more reversible. If you want to quickly give a table a brand new look (or there is a stain on the front part of the table runner you don’t want anybody to see) only flip the table speaker over and you’re set.

More Table Runner Tips

• Choose a fabric that will maintain its shape, like cotton. A cotton-polyester mixture will work also. And home décor cloths make great runners.
• Given that table runners are really easy to make, and use a little material in comparison to tablecloths, you may have a collection of table runners for each season, holiday, or special occasion. Just pick a few themed fabrics to coordinate with the occasion, and you can make four or five table runners in one afternoon.
• A single table speaker appears great running down the middle of a table. But four or three matching table runners are able to seem great running across the breadth of your table. And, in case your table runners tend to be longer than the usual table is broad, that’s okay. Just let the ends of this table runners hang off the sides of the table.
