Wincheap.
Wincheap was established by the year A.D.
1200 and because of the lack of space within the city walls
became the site of many markets and fairs. There are two theories
regarding the name 'Wincheap', firstly that it is derived
from the Saxon Wenchiape or 'Wine-Cheap'
meaning that a wine market was once held here; secondly that
the name derives from Weychep from the old English
"Waegnceap" - a wagon. Wagons would originally
have been stored here for buying or selling: this would further
explain the width of the road, one of the widest in Canterbury.
Wincheap was well established as a suburb
of Canterbury by the thirteenth century. It still retains
much of its character today and is in the Canterbury Conservation
Area. |
